Third Suspect Arrested in ATM Thefts

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today the arrest of JUAN MEDINA, age 25, of Chicago, Illinois. MEDINA was arrested by FBI Agents, without incident, late last night in Kissimmee, Florida.

MEDINA was charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago on Saturday, with one count of bank robbery. In the complaint, MEDINA is charged with the February 20, 2002 armed robbery of a Bantek West employee who was servicing an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) machine belonging to Bank One, which was located at 6816 West Grand Avenue in Chicago.

MEDINA's brother, CALIXTO MEDINA and a third man, VICTOR REYES, were arrested by the FBI in Chicago on Friday after being charged with the theft of over $80,000 from five different ATM's in the fall of 2000. Both CALIXTO MEDINA and VICTOR REYES are former employees of Bantek West, which is an Elmhurst, Illinois based business that services and repairs ATM's for banks in the Chicago area.

Investigation has also linked CALIXTO and JUAN MEDINA to the July 21, 2001 and December 14, 2001 armed robberies of Bantek employees as they were servicing ATM's at the Bank One branch located at 1825 West Lawrence in Chicago, during which over $150,000 was taken.

JUAN MEDINA will appear in U.S. District Court in Orlando, Florida, later today, at which time his return to Chicago will be sought.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
