FBI Arrests Two for ATM Thefts

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today the arrest of VICTOR REYES, age 23, of Evergreen Park, Illinois and CALIXIO MEDINA, age 28, of Waukegan, Illinois. Both men were arrested by FBI Agents earlier today, without incident, at their residences. The Evergreen Park and Waukegan Police Departments provided assistance in making the arrests.

Both men were charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago with the theft of over $80,000 from five different Automated Teller Machines (ATM's) in the Chicago area, including one located in the lobby of the Dirksen Federal Building, during the months of September and October 2000. All of the ATM's were owned by banks that were insured by the FDIC.

According to the complaint, REYES and MEDINA were both employed by the Bantek Company, an Elmhurst, Illinois business that services ATM's throughout the Chicago area on behalf of the banks that own the machines. REYES and MEDINA utilized their position with Bantek to commit the crimes charged.

Both men are scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Geraldine Soat Brown in Chicago, later today.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
