Search for Zywicki Killer Continues

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is asking for the public's help in identifying the person or persons responsible for the August 1992 kidnapping and murder of TAMMY ZYWICKI.

A 21 year old college student, ZYWICKI departed from Evanston, Illinois on the afternoon of August 23rd, en route to Iowa where she was enrolled at Grinnell College. ZYWICKI's abandoned vehicle was found later that day parked along Interstate Highway 80 near LaSalle in central Illinois. Her body was discovered a week later along Interstate Highway 44 in rural Lawrence County, Missouri.

A multi-agency task force, headed by the FBI, was formed shortly after her disappearance to investigate the crime. During the ensuing months, hundreds of leads were pursued in a effort to identify her killer, without success. Although the task force has been disbanded, active investigation is still being conducted by both the FBI and Illinois State Police.

"We're using the somber occasion of the tenth anniversary of Tammy's disappearance to refocus the public's attention to this heinous crime" said Mr. Kneir. " We're confident that members of the public have information that could lead to the identification of the individual(s) responsible for Tammy's death. We hope that they will come forward and help us put closure to this case and bring her killer(s) to justice" Kneir added.

A $50,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the kidnapping and murder of TAMMY ZYWICKI. Additional information about this crime, including photographs of Ms. Zywicki, is available on-line at under the FBI's Most Wanted section.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Chicago FBI at (312) 431-1333.

EDITOR's NOTE: SAC Kneir is available for interview to discuss the status of the investigation. Tammy's parents, Henry and JoAnn Zywicki, are also available to discuss the loss of their daughter on the 10th anniversary of her disappearance. Contact the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645 to schedule an interview.
