Chicago Fugitive Arrested in Laredo, Texas

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), announced today the arrest of MARIO GARCIA, age 34, of Chicago, Illinois. GARCIA was arrested late yesterday, without incident, following a surveillance and vehicle stop conducted by the FBI's Laredo, Texas Safe Street Fugitive Task Force. The Task Force is comprised of FBI Special Agents and Officers from the Laredo Police Department.

GARCIA was being sought by the Chicago Police Department (CPD) for his role in the November 14, 2001 murder of DAVID RAMIREZ. Subsequent investigation by the CPD determined that GARCIA had fled the state. Shortly thereafter, a Federal warrant charging GARCIA with Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution (UFAP) was obtained by the Chicago FBI and a nationwide manhunt for GARCIA was instituted.

GARCIA is being held in Laredo, Texas pending extradition to Chicago, where he will be turned over to the Chicago Police Department to face charges for first degree murder.

The public is reminded that an arrest warrant is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court of law.
