Billy Martin was born on May 16, 1928, in Berkeley, California. During the 1960 baseball season, while Martin was a member of the Cincinnati Reds of the National Baseball League, he received a letter from a Kansas City-disgruntled fan. He thought it might lead to an extortion threat, therefore, he brought it into the FBI Office to report it. The Assistant United States Attorney declined prosecution, as he didn't think it constituted a threat. In 1975, he was the Manager of the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball Team. During Spring Training in Pompano Beach, Florida, Martin received an extortion and/or a threatening letter. Martin was of the opinion that it was sent by a disgruntled New York Yankee fan. In 1976, he received another extortion letter while managing the New York Yankees.
Billy Martin, died as a result of a car accident on December 25, 1989, while he was a passenger in a car driven by William Reedy.
