Suspect Charged in Loop Bank Robbery

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Philip J. Cline, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and Michael F. Sheahan, Cook County Sheriff, announced today the arrest of DONALD REDDICK, age 37, whose last known address is 4540 North Magnolia in Chicago. REDDICK was arrested late yesterday afternoon by the CPD, without incident, following the robbery of the First American Bank branch, located at 33 West Monroe in Chicago. REDDICK was subsequently turned over to the Chicago FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF), who charged REDDICK in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of Bank Robbery, which is a felony offense.

According to the complaint, REDDICK entered the First American Bank branch shortly before closing, approached a teller and handed her a note announcing a robbery and demanding cash. The note implied that REDDICK was armed and threatened the teller with harm, if his demands were not meet. After receiving over $1,500.00 in cash, REDDICK fled the bank and entered a nearby taxi, hoping to make his escape.

A security guard followed REDDICK from the bank, spotted him entering the cab and hailed a nearby uniformed CPD patrol officer. The officer approached REDDICK, removed him from the cab and placed him under arrest after discovering evidence linking him to the robbery. No weapon was displayed during the robbery and no injuries were reported.

REDDICK appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sidney I. Schenkier, earlier today, at which time he was ordered held without bond, pending his next scheduled court appearance. If convicted of the charges against him, REDDICK faces a possible sentence of 20 years incarceration.

In announcing this arrest, Mr. Kneir wishes to commend both bank personnel and the CPD patrol officer for their alertness and quick response to this crime, which resulted in the almost immediate capture of the suspected robber.

The Chicago FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the Chicago Police Department and Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR's NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against REDDICK is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
