December 20, 2000 "BOMB ROBBER" ARRESTED Kathleen L. McChesney, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Terry G. Hillard, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD), announced today the arrest of PAUL OLMSTED RINN, age 22, of Naperville, Illinois. RINN, who is suspected of being a serial bank robber dubbed the "Bomb Robber", was arrested yesterday afternoon by CPD Officers, after robbing the North Community Bank branch located at 2500 North Clark Street in Chicago. According to witnesses, RINN entered the bank at approximately 2:00 P.M., approached a teller and handed her a note demanding money. The note also claimed that RINN had a bomb, which he would detonate if his demands were not met. After receiving an undetermined amount of cash, RINN fled the bank and entered a waiting cab. Bank customers witnessed RINN's escape and notified the CPD. Two CPD officers, responding to the bank robbery, noticed the cab in which RINN was fleeing, pursued it for several blocks and arrested RINN, who was seated in the back of the cab. RINN was subsequently turned over to the FBI and was charged in a criminal complaint filed earlier today in U.S. District Court in Chicago, with one count of bank robbery. Investigation is continuing in a attempt to link RINN to three similar robberies of Chicago banks, committed during the past two weeks. No injuries were reported in yesterday's robbery and no bomb was recovered. The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. |
