FBI LAUNCHES THREAT INVESTIGATION

Kathleen L. McChesney, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today that a criminal investigation has been initiated into the threat received at the British American Chamber of Commerce (BACOC) office, 400 N. Michigan Avenue, yesterday morning.

On Monday December 4, 2000, at approximately 11:30 A.M., a female employee of the BACOC opened a letter that had been received in the day's mail. The letter bore no return address and was post-marked Phoenix, Arizona. A dark colored powder was found inside the envelope, along with a one page typed note, claiming that the powder was contaminated with Anthrax spores. No demands or additional threats were listed and the letter was unsigned.

The employee was examined at a local hospital and released. The letter, along with it's contents, are being tested by the Illinois Department of Public Health at their state laboratory in Chicago. Preliminary test results are negative for Anthrax. Complete test results will be made available, later this week.
