Charges Filed in Dolton Kidnapping

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Ronald Burge, Chief of the Dolton, Illinois Police Department, announced today the arrest of NANCY BEBOUT, age 39, of St. Petersburg, Florida. BEBOUT surrendered to local authorities in Florida, Saturday afternoon. BEBOUT had been the subject of a nationwide manhunt, following the abduction Friday afternoon of an 18 month old child from a residence in south suburban Dolton, Illinois.

BEBOUT was charged in a criminal complaint filed Saturday in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one (1) count of Kidnapping, which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, BEBOUT is alleged to have taken the 18 month old child, who is her granddaughter, without the knowledge or consent of the mother, from the Dolton residence of a babysitter, with whom the child had been left by its mother. BEBOUT and the child are believed to have traveled by commercial airliner to St. Petersburg, where BEBOUT resides.

BEBOUT is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Tampa, later today, at which time she will be afforded her initial appearance. If convicted of the charge against her, BEBOUT faces a maximum sentence of up to life in prison.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against BEBOUT is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
