SUSPECTED SERIAL BANK ROBBER ARRESTED

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Philip J. Cline, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and Michael F. Sheahan, Cook County Sheriff announced today the arrest of CARL A. DEANDREA, age 37, of 8319 West O'Connor in River Grove, Illinois. DEANDREA was arrested at his residence Friday morning, without incident, by members of the Chicago FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force, assisted by Detectives from the Melrose Park, Illinois Police Department.

DEANDREA was charged in a criminal complaint filed Friday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one (1) count of Bank Robbery, which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, DEANDREA is alleged to have robbed the Bank One branch, located at 1836 North Broadway in Melrose Park, of over $4,000 on October 17, 2003. Although DEANDREA is believed to have been armed during the robbery, no injuries were reported.

DEANDREA is also suspected of involvement in at least six other bank robberies in the northwest area of Chicago, dating to May of this year, which have been attributed to an individual dubbed the "Jefferson Park Bandit". A detailed listing of these robberies is attached.

DEANDREA appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sidney I. Schenkier, late Friday afternoon, at which time he was ordered held without bond pending his next scheduled court appearance. If convicted of the charge against him, DEANDREA faces a maximum penalty of 20 years incarceration.

The Chicago FBI's VCTF is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the CPD and Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff's Department.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against DEANDREA is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
