Suspect in West Side Murder Arrested in Virginia

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Philip J. Cline, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and Michael F. Sheahan, Cook County Sheriff announced today the arrest of JOHN E. TAYLOR, Jr., age 41, of 7513 South Langley in Chicago. TAYLOR was arrested earlier today, without incident, by FBI Special Agents assigned to the Richmond Field Office and Officers of the Albemarle County, Virginia, Sheriff's Department.

TAYLOR was charged in a criminal complaint filed late last week in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one (1) count of Unlawful Flight to Avoid Confinement (UFAC), which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, TAYLOR was on parole with the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) following a 1992 conviction for armed robbery. His IDOC parole officer learned that TAYLOR, who at the time was also a suspect in the October 14, 2003 murder of his wife, Nickole Kitchen, had left the state in violation of his parole. TAYLOR has since been charged by the Cook County State's Attorney with murder in the death of Ms. Kitchen.

After the warrant charging TAYLOR with UFAC was obtained, the Chicago FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) instituted a nationwide manhunt for him. This investigation led authorities in Virginia to a motel in Charlottesville, where TAYLOR was arrested early this morning. TAYLOR is being held by the Albemarle County Sheriff, pending his extradition to Illinois.

The Chicago FBI's VCTF is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the CPD and Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff's Department.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against TAYLOR is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
