Chicago's Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory to Expand

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Kenneth R. Ramsey, Kane County Sheriff announced today that the Kane County Sheriff's Office was joining the Chicago Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory (RCFL) as a participating agency.

Established earlier this year, the Chicago RCFL provides forensic examinations of digital media, such as computers, in support of both investigations and /or prosecutions of federal, state and local crimes to law enforcement agencies in twenty-one counties in northern Illinois. The Chicago RCFL is housed in a $1.5 million dollar, state-of-the-art facility located at 610 South Canal Street in Chicago.

The Kane County Sheriff's Office joins the FBI, Illinois State Police, Cook and Will County Sheriff's Departments, Illinois Attorney General, University of Illinois at Chicago Police and the Chicago and Palatine Police Departments as participating agencies in the Chicago RCFL.

In making this announcement, Sheriff Ramsey said "We are very pleased to join forces with the Chicago RCFL and to aid in the fight against crimes involving digital evidence. This alliance is an invaluable opportunity for our agency to sharpen our computer forensic skills while protecting our citizens. I hope other law enforcement agencies will follow suit and reap these same benefits by becoming an active participant in this important program."

"The RCFL program is the elite computer forensic network in the country," said Mr. Kneir. "With laboratories operating in San Diego, North Texas, Kansas City and Chicago, and six more slated to open by the end of 2004, we are well poised to address one of the most daunting challenges facing law enforcement today."
