State Corrections Officer Arrested on Federal Drug Charges

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today the arrest of KEENAN MARTIN, JR., age 27, of 2645 West 171st Street in Hazelcrest, Illinois. MARTIN was arrested this morning, without incident, by FBI Special Agents at his residence.

MARTIN was charged in a criminal complaint filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of "Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance (Marijuana)," which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, MARTIN is alleged to have smuggled numerous packets of marijuana into the Stateville Correctional Facility in Joliet, where he was employed as a Correctional Officer. These drugs were brought into the facility by MARTIN for sale to and use by inmates.

MARTIN is the fifth person charged so far this year in the ongoing investigation of illegal drug trafficking at Stateville Prison, which is being conducted jointly by the FBI, Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Corrections.

MARTIN appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Mason this afternoon, at which time he was formally charged. MARTIN was released on a personal recognizance bond, pending his next scheduled court appearance. If convicted of the charge against him, MARTIN faces a possible sentence of up to 5 years incarceration and a $250,000 fine.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR's NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against MARTIN is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
