Reward Offered in Assault on Agent

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today that a reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the individual involved in the December 4, 2002 attempted shooting of an FBI Special Agent.

As was previously reported, a Special Agent assigned to the Chicago office of the FBI, returned to his apartment in the 900 block of West Schubert Avenue in the late morning hours to discover a burglar inside. A confrontation between the intruder and the Agent ensued, with several shots fired at the Agent from a handgun. The Agent pursued the intruder down the back stairs and into the alley, in an attempt to apprehend him. Several additional shots were fired at the Agent, enabling the intruder to escape.

No injuries were reported from the encounter and subsequent chase. A search of the Agent's residence determined that a Glock model 22, .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun, issued to him by the FBI, hand been stolen, along with several items of personal property.

The intruder is described as a black/male, 35-40 years of age, 5'8" tall, heavy build, with a possible mustache. He was wearing a grey and black, down filled jacket in poor condition and a dark colored stocking cap. It is possible that this individual is responsible for several other burglaries and home invasions in the Lincoln Park area during the past several months.

This matter is being investigated jointly by the FBI, as an assault on a Federal Agent and Theft of Government Property, and by the Chicago Police Department, as an Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Home Invasion.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the FBI at (312) 431-1333.
