Chicago Area Native Placed on FBI's "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" List

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) today placed MICHAEL ALFONSO on its "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list. ALFONSO, who is a registered sex offender, is wanted by Illinois authorities for the murder of two former girlfriends. ALFONSO should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.

ALFONSO was charged by the DuPage County States Attorney with the June 6, 2001 murder of his 28 year-old ex-girlfriend, Genoveva Velasquez, as she arrived for work at a restaurant located in Wheaton, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. ALFONSO allegedly approached Velasquez as she was about to enter to the restaurant and shot her five times with a handgun. Velasquez, who was a resident of Glendale Heights, Illinois and the mother of one child, died at the scene.

ALFONSO is also charged with the 1992 murder of Sumanear Yang, a 23 year-old resident of Wheaton, Illinois. According to charges that were filed by the Kendall County States Attorney, and un-sealed today, ALFONSO is alleged to have killed Yang in September of 1992, after she ended their brief relationship. Yang was reported missing on September 5th and her burning automobile was discovered in Chicago on September 18th. Yang's skeletal remains were found in a wooded area of the Silver Springs State Park, which is located in Yorkville, Illinois, on November 9, 1992.

ALFONSO is described as a Black/male, date of birth June 26, 1969 at Wheaton, Illinois. He is 5'5" tall, 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He has a stab wound scar on his left chest and the name "Blanca" tattooed on his upper back. ALFONSO speaks fluent Spanish, has held jobs as a laborer and factory worker, and is a regular patron of gyms and fitness clubs.

ALFONSO was born MICHAEL ALFONSO JOHNSON, but legally changed his name following the disappearance on Sumanear Yang. He has family ties to the Chicago area, as well as Phoenix, Arizona; Columbus, Georgia; Memphis, Tennessee; Alabama and Mississippi. In the past, he has traveled to Puerta Vallarta, Mexico.

MICHAEL ALFONSO is the 476th person to be placed on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list, which was established in 1950. Since then, 446 fugitives have been apprehended or located, 145 of them as a result of citizen cooperation.

A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered for any information directly leading to the arrest of MICHAEL ALFONSO. Anyone with information about ALFONSO should take no action themselves, but instead immediately contact the nearest FBI office or local law enforcement agency. For any possible sightings outside the United States, contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
