Two Arrested in Separate Chicago-Area Bank Robberies

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Terry G. Hillard, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) announced today the arrest of ANTHONY E. MORGAN, age 34, whose last known address was a Salvation Army half-way house, located at 105 South Ashland in Chicago. MORGAN was arrested yesterday afternoon, without incident, by an alert CPD Officer who was on routine patrol in the loop area of downtown Chicago.

MORGAN will be charged in a criminal complaint filed later today in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of Bank Robbery, which is a felony offense, for the April 9th robbery of the First American Bank, located at 33 West Monroe in Chicago. According to the complaint, MORGAN entered the bank Wednesday morning and approached a teller, handing her a note announcing a robbery and demanding money. Although the note implied that he was armed, no weapon was displayed and no injuries were reported. MORGAN is alleged to have fled the bank on foot, after obtaining approximately $1400 in cash.

The following day, a CPD Officer on routine patrol spotted MORGAN loitering on the corner of State and Monroe, which is a short distance from the bank. MORGAN matched the physical description of the robber from the previous day, prompting the Officer to conduct additional investigation. A check of computerized criminal records revealed that MORGAN was wanted for violation of Federal Parole stemming from a 1997 conviction for Bank Robbery. MORGAN was taken into custody and subsequently turned over to the Chicago FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF). Additional investigation by the VCTF linked MORGAN to the April 9th robbery, resulting in the current charges.

MORGAN is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys at 2:00 PM today, at which time he will be formally charged. If convicted of the charge against him, MORGAN faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years incarceration, as well as revocation of his parole.

Mr. Kneir also announced today the arrest of DANIEL FAIRBANK VINCENT, age 21, of 2208 Oak Ridge Drive in Aurora. VINCENT was arrested yesterday afternoon, without incident, by FBI Special Agents and Officers from several local police departments in Geneva, Illinois.

VINCENT was charged in a criminal complaint filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Chicago, with the June 21, 2002 robbery of the South End Savings Bank, 18200 South Halsted in Homewood. According to the complaint, VINCENT entered the bank and approached a teller displaying a note which claimed that he was armed and demanding money. After obtaining approximately $6400 in cash, VINCENT fled the bank on foot. No weapon was displayed during the robbery and no injuries were reported.

Subsequent investigation by the FBI and several local police departments, including Homewood and Algonquin, Illinois and Hammond, Indiana, linked VINCENT to the June 21st robbery. Investigation is continuing to determine if VINCENT might be responsible for additional bank robberies in both northwest Indiana and the Chicago Metropolitan area.

VINCENT appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys late yesterday evening and was ordered held without bond, pending his next scheduled court appearance. If convicted of the charge against him, VINCENT faces up to 20 years incarceration.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR's NOTE: A copy of the complaints filed against both MORGAN and VINCENT are available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
