Dr. Friedemann
Freund, an Adjunct Professor of Physics at San Jose State
University and a scientist in Ecosystem Science and Technology Branch (SGE)
and his colleagues have performed research on the (upper) compression of rocky
material. This work is mentionned prominently in an article entitled
"Anticipating Earthquakes" in the electronic publication "Science @NASA".
Their work some day may lead to earthquake prediction. The article may be reviewed

The
Costa Rican Airborne Research and Technology Application (CARTA) mission held
its first science workshop in San Jose , Costa Rica from 11 to 15 August. The
CARTA mission flew a mass spectrometer developed by Kennedy Space Center (KSC)
for Dr. Jorge Andres Diaz of the University of Costa Rica to monitor gas emissions
from volcanic craters. Jeff Myers and Bruce Coffland of the Airborne Sensor
Facility (ASF) are representing Ames which provided visible and infrared photography
as well as multispectral imaging.
The Ames Earth Science Project Office, represented by Mike Craig and
Mike Gaune, is also in Costa Rica this week carrying out a site survey for
the upcoming pre-Aura Validation Experiment (AVE) field campaign to be conducted
early in 2004.
