Dr. Friedemann Freund, an Adjunct Professor of Physics at San Jose State University and a scientist in Ecosystem Science and Technology Branch (SGE) and his colleagues have performed research on the (upper) compression of rocky material. This work is mentionned prominently in an article entitled "Anticipating Earthquakes" in the electronic publication "Science @NASA". Their work some day may lead to earthquake prediction.
