Madalyn Murray O'Hair led the protest against compulsory prayer and Bible reading in public schools. She also asked the courts to tax the churches. Her son, William Murray, broke off contact with his mother because of her "extremist views." Mrs. Murray accused her son of stealing her mailing lists and other records belonging to her. She filed suit to have the words "under God" stricken from the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag, but was turned down by the school board on this issue. The Atheist Society ousted Mrs. Murray and her family from the organization. She met Richard O'Hair in Mexico and they were getting married in the file.
