Frances Perkins was the Secretary of Labor. She received several threats and/or extortion letters during this time, and sometimes it necessitated extra protection for her safety. One such threatening letter was resolved by committing the writer to Bellevue Hospital for observation. He was judged to be insane and committed on May 31, 1941, by the State Court to Veterans' Division, Kings Park Hospital. She was the Secretary of Labor for 12 years, beginning in 1933, and leaving in 1945. When she left the post of Secretary of Labor, she went to work at the Civil Service Commission. Frances Perkins was born on April 10, 1882, at Boston, Massachusetts. In 1952, a background investigation was done at the request of the White House.
