Graphic for the FBI WorkforceCurious about how many people work for the FBI today? Here are the latest numbers, including changes since 9/11/01 and a few other interesting details.

Today

Total number of FBI employees: 28,576.

Total special agents: 12,156.

Total support professionals: 16,420, including more than 1,300 analysts and more than 1,000 information technology experts.

Number of FBI employees who are women and/or minorities: Nearly 16,000.

Bureau employees stationed overseas: More than 200 agents and support staff are assigned permanently to our 47 Legal Attaches worldwide, with hundreds more supporting them on a temporary basis. More than 125 agents and other personnel are in Athens, for example, to help support security initiatives at the Olympic Games.

Changes Since 9/11/01

New employees hired since 9/11: 5,606. That includes 2,731 special agents and 2,875 support employees.

Growth in the total FBI workforce since 9/11 (after retirements, etc.): 1,662 employees, including 990 agents and 672 support employees.

Other Interesting Facts

Special agents with advanced degrees: More than 6,000 (more than half).

FBI employees who are proficient in at least one foreign language: More than 2,400, half of whom are special agents.

As an example of the diverse skills in the FBI, guess how many chemists are on the Bureau payroll? 48. Along with 3 geologists, 3 mathematicians, and 1 metallurgist.
