Publications Officer-Entry and Developmental Level

Work Schedule: Full Time
Salary: 37,858 - 50,593
GS-8/1 - GS-11/1
Location: Washington, DC metropolitan area

Publication Officers support the CIA's intelligence efforts by editing and publishing daily and periodic publications as a facet of the Agency's intelligence information collection program or as an adjunct to intelligence research and analysis. These professionals apply publishing tradecraft principles, corporate writing standards, and knowledge of grammar and punctuation in producing and archiving publications in hardcopy and especially in electronic formats. Products are disseminated internally and to policymakers throughout the federal government, including the President of the United States.


Minimum requirements include a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field. Candidates must be detail-oriented and able to work effectively in a fast-paced teamwork environment in order to meet customer deadlines. They must possess comprehensive knowledge of grammar and punctuation, and they will successfully complete a test in editing. CIA is currently hiring for Entry and Developmental levels:

Entry (GS 08 - GS 09) - Edits, creates, and processes simple text and graphics products for hardcopy and electronic publication and dissemination. Learns and applies established technical production and quality control standards and guidelines.

Developmental (GS 10 - GS 11) - In addition to entry-level requirements, more experienced applicants will have gained substantial direct experience in publishing through positions in either the private sector or elsewhere in the US Government.

Throughout these levels of progression, Publications Officers will have the opportunity to participate in training available internally or through external classes, workshops, seminars, and conferences.

All applicants must successfully complete a thorough medical and psychological exam, a polygraph interview, and an extensive background investigation. US citizenship is required.
