Mark Mansfield

Mark Mansfield was appointed Director, Office of Public Affairs, on 2 August 2004 by then-Acting Director of Central Intelligence John E. McLaughlin.

Mansfield is a 22-year veteran of CIA and had been the Agency’s Deputy Director of Public Affairs/Media since 1997.  He has been involved in CIA’s internal and external communications efforts for 17 years.

Mansfield has held a variety of positions in CIA’s Public Affairs Office under six Directors of Central Intelligence, including speechwriter for former DCI William Webster (1987-89), Agency spokesman (1989-92 and 1994-96), and Chief of Media Relations (1997).  In 1992-93, he supervised an analytical branch in the Directorate of Intelligence and, in 1993-94, he served as the editor of the Agency’s internal newsletter.  He was CIA’s Acting Director of Public Affairs from February to August 1997.

Mansfield began his career as an editor with the Directorate of Science and Technology and served overseas from 1983-85.

Hailing from northern New Jersey, Mansfield received an M.S.J. from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1982 and a B.A. from Rutgers College in 1980.
