Lisi Kaufman

Lisi Kaufman was appointed Chief of Staff to Secretary Don Evans at the U.S. Department of Commerce on February 1, 2003.

Kaufman previously served as Chief of Staff to the Deputy Secretary of Commerce, Dr. Samuel Bodman, since November 2001. She was Dr. Bodman's senior advisor and directed the operations of his office.

Kaufman is serving her second tour of government service at the Department of Commerce. From 1989 to 1993, she was the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs. In addition to serving as the liaison to the state and local elected officials, she represented the Department of the National Women's Business Council and the Lowell Historic Preservation Council.

Immediately prior to her appointment as Chief of Staff, Kaufman directed the Washington, D.C. office of Governor John G. Rowland of Connecticut. In that capacity, she was the state's liaison to Congress and the Administration where she developed state and federal policy initiatives. Kaufman also represented the Governor's Office to the National Governor's Association and the Republican Governor's Association of which Governor Rowland is Chairman.

Kaufman previously served as Federal Liaison at the New York State Department of Labor. In 1994, she was an election observer for the International Foundation of Election Security in the first democratic national election in El Salvador. Kaufman also led a delegation of U.S. Women Legislators to Guatemala and El Salvador that year.

Kaufman has been active in Republican politics during her lifetime, and served as an advisor to the office of Mrs. Lynne Cheney during the 2001 Presidential Transition.

A native of Boston, Kaufman is an alumna of Salem State College. She is the mother of two daughters.
