Notice:

Benchmark revisions to the M3 survey released on August 19, 2003 were revised on August 25, 2003. Revisions affected the following series: Table 1 - "All Manufacturing Industries With Unfilled Orders - Shipments, Table 4 - "All Manufacturing Industries With Unfilled Orders - Inventories, and Table 7 - "Durable Goods Industries, Total - Unfilled orders/Shipments". With the cooperation of the Semiconductor Industry Association and many of its member companies, the Census Bureau is again able to publish shipments data on this important sector of our economy. The Census Bureau will not publish orders data and will only publish inventory data at higher level aggregates.

New Orders

NEW ORDERS for manufactured durable goods in September increased $0.4 billion or 0.2 percent to $195.7 billion, the Department of Commerce, U.S. Census Bureau reported today. This followed a 0.6 percent August decrease.

Shipments

SHIPMENTS of manufactured durable goods in September decreased $2.3 billion or 1.2 percent to $199.1 billion. This followed a 1.9 percent August increase.

Unfilled Orders

UNFILLED ORDERS for manufactured durable goods in September, up thirteen of the last fourteen months, increased $3.8 billion or 0.7 percent to $539.0 billion. This followed a 0.3 percent August increase and is at the highest level since May 2001.

Inventories

INVENTORIES of manufactured durable goods in September, up ten consecutive months, increased $0.8 billion or 0.3 percent to $277.7 billion. This followed a 0.8 percent August increase.

Capital Goods Industries

Defense

New orders in September increased $2.2 billion or 26.5 percent to $10.6 billion.

Nondefense

New orders in September increased $0.4 billion or 0.6 percent to $65.2 billion.




Released October 27, 2004. This report presents advance information on two key business indicators: durable goods manufacturers' shipments and orders. Revised and more detailed estimates plus nondurable goods will be published November 3, 2004. The advance report on durable goods for October is scheduled for November 24, 2004.
