Subject: E10) What are the average, most, and least tropical cyclones occurring in each basin?

Contributed by Gary Padgett

Note that for Southern Hemisphere basins the 'year' runs from 1 July to 30 June (exp: 1968 means 1 July 1967 to 30 June 1968). In the hemispheric totals I've adjusted for duplicate listings of interbasin cyclones, so that each tropical cyclone is only counted once.

Record number of storms by basin

Based on data from 1968-2003
(1968/69 to 1989/2003 for the Southern Hemisphere)
(1980-2003 for North Indian Ocean)
Tropical Storm
(greater than 17 m/s sustained winds)
Hurricane/Typhoon/Severe Tropical Cyclone
(greater than 33 m/s sustained winds)
Intense Hurricane
(greater than 50 m/s sustained winds)
