The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environmental Program to assess scientific information on climate change. The IPCC publishes reports that summarize the state of the science. At the request of the JSC / CLIVAR Working Group on Coupled Modeling (WGCM) , the PCMDI is archiving coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model output to support the Working Group 1 component of the IPCC's 4th Assessment Report. The data archived by the PCMDI from each participating coupled ocean-atmosphere model is a subset of that model's output. Working Group 1 of the IPCC focuses on the physical climate system -- atmosphere, land surface, ocean and sea ice -- and the choice of variables archived at the PCMDI reflects this focus.

Accessing IPCC model output:

  1. Register your scientific interest with the WGCM Climate Simulation Panel.
  2. Once the panel confirms your registration by email, you may enter the "data portal" where you will also be required to register.  (You may browse the current data holdings without registering, but you will not be able to download the data.)
  3. Consult the complete list of model simulations (scenarios) and output fields that are expected to be available in the archive.

Contributing model output to IPCC Working Group 1 archive:

  1. Please fill out a brief questionnaire, indicating your intention to contribute model output to the IPCC archive.
  2. Follow the established procedure for preparing and transferring model output to the IPCC archive.  Some of the particularly relevant documents describing the details of the procedure are listed here:
