Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory

The Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, Florida, specializes in basic and applied research in oceanography, tropical meteorology, atmospheric and oceanic chemistry, and acoustics. The principal focus of these investigations is to provide knowledge that may ultimately lead to improved prediction and forecasting of severe storms, better use and management of marine resources, better understanding of the factors affecting both climate and environmental quality, and improved ocean and weather services for the nation.

Under the research theme of oceans, AOML scientists gather, analyze, and report coastal ocean data on human-related discharges and their potential environmental impacts. Scientists work in cooperation with other federal, state, and local authorities including the EPA and US Army Corps of Engineers, to maximize research knowledge for use in economically and environmentally important projects in the coastal ocean. AOML also provides and interprets oceanographic data and conducts research relevant to decadal climate change and coastal ecosystems. This research includes the dynamics of the ocean, its interaction with the atmosphere, and its role in climate and climate change. And with a diverse scientific staff of marine, atmospheric, and geological chemists, as well as chemical, biological, and geological oceanographers, AOML is able to use multidisciplinary approaches to solve scientific research questions. Research includes projects that are important in assessing the current and future effects of human activities on our coastal to deep ocean and atmospheric environments.
