Mission

To develop and maintain an automated data retrieval system for the
collection and dissemination of germplasm information. Provide data
processing expertise in support of the production database
consisting of over 450,000 discrete accessions of plants, with
additional records for animal, microbial, insect, and forest tree
programs. This system serves the needs of scientists and other
agricultural researchers by providing accurate taxonomy, passport,
geographic, evaluation, inventory, and cooperator information.

Goals

Maintain and enhance the Germplasm Resources Information
Network (GRIN) for the National Genetic Resources Program,
including:

Animals
Invertebrates
Microbes
Plants

Provide data processing assistance to the National Germplasm
Resources Laboratory (NGRL) and the National Program Staff
(NPS).

Cooperate with foreign countries in the development of germplasm
information systems.
