Sapelo Island is the fourth largest Georgia barrier island and one of the most pristine. It encompasses a total of 6,110 acres and is comprised primarily of salt marshes, maritime forests and beach dune areas. Its bountiful natural resources, rich history and contributions to estuarine ecology have made it a unique and important ecological resource worthy of its protected status as a National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Specifically, its mission is to the study the chemical, radiative and dynamical processes of the Earth's atmosphere. Today, the Aeronomy Laboratory’s research focuses on climate change, regional air chemistry and stratospheric ozone-layer recovery.

Although typically used for navigational applications, this information is now being utilized for non-navigational applications by the NOAA Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services' COASTAL Program.
