For Teachers and StudentsAt NMAO we enjoy opportunities to interact with students and teachers, whether in the classroom, at our marine or aircraft operations centers, or on board our research ships and aircraft. If you’d like to visit a ship while it’s in port in your area, please contact our marine center to arrange a tour for your school group. Are you studying oceanography or marine biology in class? Perhaps we can support your class project aboard a ship by conducting an experiment that you design. Would you like to “talk” to a ship captain at sea via the Internet? Some schools have joined our ships for live broadcasts, in which the captain answers questions from students. Touring a NOAA airplane or jet can be a fun educational experience, too. NOAA aircraft–including the renowned “hurricane hunter” aircraft that fly directly into hurricanes to collect meteorological data–are based at NOAA’s Aircraft Operations Center in Florida. Call the center to arrange a class tour of these and our other specially equipped research aircraft. Sometimes public open houses are held aboard NOAA aircraft at locations across the nation where they are working. These events are usually advertised in local papers. Our NOAA Corps officers and civilian personnel are often available to speak to school groups. If you are interested in learning more about NOAA and the Office of Marine and Aviation Operations, give us a call and we’ll see if we can arrange a speaker in an area of interest to you. Teacher at Sea ProgramAre you a teacher who is interested in oceanographic research? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is looking for motivated teachers (K-16) with a desire to do scientific research at sea and share that experience with students and colleagues. Several NOAA ships participate in this extraordinary program called Teacher at Sea. Student Connection ProjectDo you want to know what the scientists aboard a NOAA ship do while they are at sea? The "Student Connection" project utilizes the Internet and Inmarsat (satellite communications), to communicate twice weekly between students on the beach and the scientists and crew of the NOAA Ship Oscar Elton settee. Through this web site, students can follow the vessel's daily operations through regularly posted pictures and write-ups.
