Each year, the U.S. House of Representatives hosts the Congressional App Challenge. This is an annual coding competition designed to encourage middle school and high school student participation in computer science and coding, regardless of experience. It is an opportunity for students to compete against other peers within their district by creating an original application in a variety of programming languages and on different platforms.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that my legislation to provide direct payments to growers who had crop losses due to natural disasters in 2020 or 2021 is being implemented. USDA will immediately begin Phase 1 of the program which will now be referred to as the Emergency Relief Program (previously known as the Wildfire and Hurricane Indemnity Program Plus or WHIP+).

Community Funded Projects (CFPs) allow Members of Congress to provide greater input on how funding will be directed to specific state or local governments or eligible non-profit recipients. I fully support this tool as Congress has both the right and responsibility to provide input on funding decisions for worthwhile project proposals critical to the health, safety and economic well-being of the people of our districts.

Congressman Mike Thompson has launched a Congressional Student Leadership Council, an exciting program that allows local students to work directly with Mike and his staff to develop leadership skills, get to know how government works, and engage with our community first hand. The Council is open to all high school students in California's Fifth Congressional District.

An important part of Congressman Thompson's job is to help residents of California's Fifth Congressional District navigate the complex federal agency system. If you are having trouble working with a federal agency—like the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, or the IRS—our office may be able to assist! Though we cannot guarantee a favorable outcome, we will do our best to ensure you receive a fair and timely response.

Each year, Congressman Thompson nominates outstanding high school graduates from California's Fifth Congressional District for appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York; the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York.

WASHINGTON, D.C. INTERNSHIPS

Congressman Thompson's Washington, D.C. office is currently seeking interns in a fast-paced Congressional Office where they will gain valuable exposure to and knowledge of the legislative process and the United States Congress.

Constituents of California's Fifth Congressional District can order a United States flag through my Washington office. All flags are sold at cost and take approximately 4 to 6 weeks for delivery, depending on availability.
