McHenry County College could receive $825,000 in federal dollars to expand its dual credit and dual degree program if legislation being considered in the U.S. House of Representatives moves forward.

The allocation is one of several education, health care and youth initiatives that U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, has requested funding for, according to a news release from her office.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden is taking himself to tough political turf with his visit Wednesday to Crystal Lake, in McHenry County, where voters rejected Democrats Biden, Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Lauren Underwood in 2020.

He'll be at McHenry County College, a community college in Crystal Lake — northwest of Chicago — promoting key parts of his domestic policy agenda — packaged and branded as it works its way through Congress as the American Families Plan.

Fourteenth District Congresswoman Lauren Underwood was in Yorkville at Senior Services Associates on Thursday to speak to the importance of at-home caregivers.

Underwood says something needs to be done to increase the number of caregivers available and that the economy depends on it.

She says that family members, especially women, left the workforce to become caregivers during the pandemic. AgeGuide Northeastern Illinois Executive Officer Marla Fronczak, also spoke Thursday.

She says that the pandemic revealed service gaps for aging adults.

And to the nursing workforce, she shared a message of gratitude, particularly reflecting on the profound sadness and the added stress the COVID-19 pandemic has caused in the lives of nurses.

"I know that it's heavy, and it is hard," she said. "But your work has made such an impact, and I am so pleased to have this opportunity to celebrate you."

U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, along with her colleagues, introduced new legislation which aims to bolster training and jobs in the public health sector amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The Health Force and Resilience Force Act would recruit, train and employ Americans to expand the nation's public health workforce to respond to the pandemic, according to a news release.

Underwood, D-Naperville, introduced the bill with Reps. Jason Crow, D-Colorado, and Jimmy Panetta, D-California.

U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood's bill aiming to improve mental health care among veterans to reduce suicide rates was signed into law this past week.

The Veterans' Care Quality Transparency Act, H.R. 2372, aims to ensure both the Veterans Administration and outside providers offer veterans high-quality mental health and suicide prevention services, according to a news release.

The bipartisan bill unanimously passed the Senate on Sept. 24.

U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood backed legislation to improve a federal loan program for small businesses hit hard by measures taken to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The House of Representatives passed the bipartisan Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act which supporters like Underwood, D-Naperville, argued would improve the program's loan forgiveness process so small businesses can make use of the aid, according to a news release.

At 6 a.m. Monday, Memorial Day, the day the nation remembers military members who died while serving our country, Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Ill., left her Naperville apartment to drive south, some 40 miles, to the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

Memorial Day was the first federal holiday we observed while struggling through the COVID-19 pandemic, and for many, the traditions we used to do on this day couldn't be done.
