Congressman Andy Levin is pleased to announce the second year of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Youth Conference (MLKYC). #MLKYC is an annual event for 9th District high school students to deeply honor and build on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy as a driver of system change. We would like to invite a new group of 10th and 11th grade students to participate this year!

About the Conference

There is an unmet opportunity to wrestle with the fundamental lessons of Dr. King’s life: the long-term movement-building and nonviolent struggle that enabled the wins of the Civil Rights era; and the extent to which Dr. King took brave and unpopular stances – he was no Hallmark Card figure of universal acclaim in his time. In partnership with district leaders and educators, the Office of Congressman Andy Levin aims to provide young people in the 9th District with a deep learning experience about Dr. King’s philosophy and activities — and an opportunity to reflect on the relevance of this history for their own lives and the challenges of today.

The 2022 #MLKYC will include a panel discussion with activists, academics, and other leaders that addresses topics such as how students can make meaningful change, Dr. King’s philosophies, and possible future paths towards social justice. The conference will also include a workshop on an introduction to direct action. Through the conference activities, students will begin to:

  • Learn the differentiation between social service and social justice
  • Gain a better understanding of the nonviolent action/long-term organizing that powered the accomplishments of the Civil Rights movement
  • Find relevance in Civil Rights history for today’s challenges and their future work for social justice
  • Take on action plans on a specific issue

The conference will be virtually on Saturday, January 15, 2022 from 2:00PM-4:30PM and students are able to register here. We hope you are able to join us!
