Internships

Our office is expecting fall 2022 internships to be hybrid (with virtual and in-person components) for both the District office in Warren, MI and the Washington, DC office.

Candidates to both offices should possess excellent writing and communication skills, a flexible, positive attitude, and a passion for public service. Candidates should also be proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

Washington, DC

In the Washington, DC office, internships run throughout the fall, spring or summer semesters for college students and recent graduates. Interns receive stipends and gain invaluable work experience. The hours are flexible to accommodate students' hectic course schedules, but generally run 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM when the House is in session, and 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM when not in session.

In Washington, DC, interns' responsibilities will vary. They may be asked to answer phones, run errands, research policies and legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office. DC staff will work with interns to tailor projects to meet both their interests and key needs of the office.

District

In the District office (DO), interns will become an integral part of the DO team with some opportunities to support and collaborate with DC staff. District staff will work with interns to tailor projects to meet both their interests and key needs of the office. Potential responsibilities range from helping outreach staff to prepare and execute meetings and events, supporting communications and legislative staff with writing and research, supporting social media content, taking constituent calls and assisting with casework, and helping to supporting long-term and annual office initiatives like the Social Media Ambassadors Program, the Congressional App Challenge, Congressional Art Challenge, MLK Jr. Day Youth Conference, and service academy nominations process. Interns will leave the experience with a deep understanding of the District Office’s important role in shaping Congressman Levin’s priorities in D.C.

Interns should plan to work a minimum of 20 hours during a normal work week (Monday - Friday 9 AM – 5 PM). Staff will work with interns to set a weekly schedule that accommodates any other school or work commitments. It is preferred to include half-days or full days in the intern’s schedule to accommodate longer projects and tasks. Interns may also be asked to staff occasional evening or weekend events.
