Protecting Reproductive Rights

Every woman in America deserves to make their own healthcare decisions. Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, the Supreme Court has diminished a fifty-year precedent that is having a profound impact across our country.

Some states have enacted abortion bans and draconian laws that are punishing women for seeking reproductive health services. No woman should be punished for doing what is right for herself and her family. That is why I have been working in Congress to defend and protect reproductive rights nationwide.

Women’s Health Protection Act

The Women’s Health Protection Act, of which I am a co-sponsor, would guarantee a woman’s right to access reproductive services across all 50 states, including U.S. territories. This legislation establishes legal protections for the right to provide and access reproductive healthcare, free from medically unnecessary restrictions and bans on abortion, including forced waiting periods, biased counseling, and pre-viability bans. This bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives and failed to reach enough votes to pass the U.S. Senate.

Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act

Abortion providers, including doctors in California, are at risk of legal penalties for providing care and services to women from out of state. Threats from other states' laws should not impact the medical decisions made by providers.

House Democrats and I passed the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, which would protect individuals crossing state lines who are seeking safe and legal reproductive healthcare, including those traveling with them, from criminal prosecution.

Right to Contraception Act

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has paved the way for states to ban access to contraceptives, some of which are working to do. Access to contraceptives is a basic human right that must be protected and defended on behalf of the American people.

I helped pass the Right to Contraception Act would create a statutory right for individuals to obtain contraceptives and engage in contraception. This bill would protect several contraceptive methods, medications, devices, and healthcare providers who provide contraceptives and health information related to contraception.
