WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick issued the following statement upon today’s passage of the Respect for Marriage Act:

“Today, we took a stand for justice and equality in a bipartisan vote for the Respect for Marriage Act. By enshrining marriage equality into law, we ensure long overdue federal protections for same-sex and interracial partnerships. This monumental step forward serves as a moment of celebration during a time of rising anti-LGBTQ rhetoric across the country. As a member of the LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, I am committed to continuing the fight for equitable legislation for all Americans, regardless of who they choose to love.”
