CAPAC Chair Chu Statement Honoring Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Washington, D.C. – Today, as Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she will not pursue a leadership post for the 118th Congress, CAPAC Chair Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) issued the following statement:

“Speaker Pelosi leaves behind a historic legacy. As the first woman to serve in this esteemed position, for two decades she has led the House in passing landmark legislation such as the Affordable Care Act, the American Rescue Plan, the Inflation Reduction Act, and so many others. These bills took significant steps to reduce racial and ethnic disparities for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities by increasing access to health care, creating jobs, and combatting the climate crisis. In addition, Speaker Pelosi has been a steadfast champion on behalf of AANHPI communities, including working to fight anti-Asian hate by swiftly putting bills such as the COVID–19 Hate Crimes Act on the floor, ensuring harmful anti-China rhetoric has no place in legislation such as with the CHIPS and Science Act, and recognizing our history and contributions by spearheading the addition of the late Congresswoman Patsy Mink’s portrait within the U.S. Capitol.
