Bloated defense spending must be better balanced with domestic priorities

WASHINGTON, D.C.: Congresswoman Nanette Diaz Barragán (CA-44) released the following statement after she voted against the National Defense Authorization Act of 2023.
“This year’s defense spending bill is $45 billion more than President Biden’s initial request and over $89 billion above last year’s defense bill,” said Rep. Barragán. “These tens of billions of dollars could be better invested in communities of color that face health inequities, environmental injustice, persistent homelessness, and an increased cost of living. While I support a strong national defense, we must better balance our defense budget with budgets for additional resources and programs that create opportunity and improve the quality of life for individuals and families in our communities.”
