Rep. Payne, Jr. Condemns Bomb Threats Against Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. condemns the violent threats against Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and supported a resolution (H.Con.Res. 70) today to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to combat any violence, real or perceived, against HBCU students, faculty and staff.  From January 5, 2022 through February 1, 2022, there were 32 bomb threats against HBCU institutions nationwide, such as Howard University in Washington, D.C. and Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, FL.  HBCU institutions were established in the 19th century to defy discrimination in academia and provide educational opportunities for African-American students.        

“I was furious to hear about the bomb threats to some of our most famous and successful Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr.  “These institutions provide a safe haven for African-American students to learn and excel.  They should not have to be subjected to threats of violence while they get an education.  I am proud to condemn these bomb threats and support HBCUs in every way I can.  I hope law enforcement finds the people responsible for these threats and they are punished to the full extent of the law.”
