2022 Congressional Art Competition

Congressional Art Competition

Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as our congressional district. 

I invite all current high school students within Wisconsin’s Third Congressional District to participate in this year’s competition. The first-place entry will be displayed for a year in the U.S. Capitol alongside the other contest winners from across the country. The second-place entry will be displayed in my Washington, D.C. office and the third and fourth place pieces will be displayed in my district offices.  

Tawni and I always enjoy seeing the amazing art our students create every year, and it’s great to see the talent of Wisconsin students showcased in the Capitol and my offices.

Requirements

Artwork must be two-dimensional. Each framed artwork can be no larger than 26 inches high, 26 inches wide, and 4 inches deep. If your artwork is selected as the winning piece, it must arrive in Washington, DC, framed. Even when framed, it must still measure no larger than the above maximum dimensions. No framed piece should weigh more than 15 pounds.

Accepted mediums for the two-dimensional artwork are as follows:

• Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
• Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (It is recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed.)
• Collages: must be two dimensional
• Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
• Mixed Media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
• Computer-generated art  
• Photographs

Only one entry is allowed per student. Each entry must be original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate U.S. copyright laws. Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo or image (including a painting, graphic, or advertisement) that was created by someone other than the student is a violation of the competition rules and will not be accepted. For more information on copyright laws, we recommend you visit the Scholastic website. 

Artwork submitted must adhere to the policy of the House Office Building Commission. In accordance with this policy, exhibits depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy or a sensationalistic or gruesome nature are not allowed.

Each entry must include a copy of the release form.  Click here to fill out the release form. Please print page one of the completed release form and attach it to the back of your artwork before submitting.

To submit your piece, please drop off or ship your artwork to my La Crosse or Eau Claire district offices or contact my La Crosse office toll-free at 1-888-442-8040 to make submission arrangements. 

The deadline for submitting artwork to be considered for the 2022 Competition is Friday, March 25, 2022.
