Larson Celebrates the Passage of the Respect for Marriage Act

December 8, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01), a member of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, celebrated the passage of The Respect for Marriage Act. This bill repeals the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act and safeguards the right to same-sex and interracial marriages by requiring the federal government and every state in our country to recognize them as valid. It is now headed to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law.

“The government has a responsibility to protect American freedoms and that includes ensuring their marriages will always be recognized,” said Larson. “As a member of the Equality Caucus, I proudly voted for the Respect for Marriage Act. Same-sex and interracial couples should not have to live in fear that a future Supreme Court decision could invalidate their marriage. I was glad to join so many of my colleagues today in support of this measure.”
