Taxes and Financial Assistance

Both the Federal and Minnesota tax filing deadlines have been pushed from April 15th to July 15th. You can find resources, news releases, and FAQ's for your federal taxes here, and state taxes here.

Many constituents have reached out with questions about the $1,200 economic impact payment in the stimulus package that was recently passed by Congress and signed into law. Distribution of these payments is underway. Most people will not need to do anything to receive a direct deposit from the federal government. Please refer to the IRS portal for general information about these payments.

If you have not filed a tax return in either 2018 or 2019, it is encouraged that you file your taxes as soon as you can. If you are not typically required to file a tax return (such as low-income taxpayers, eligible retirees, and recipients of disability or veterans' benefits), instructions and further information for non-filers can be found here. This also includes those who have no income and those whose income comes entirely from certain benefit programs, such as Supplemental Security Income benefits. Social Security and Railroad Retirement recipients will not have to take any action to receive the stimulus payment automatically.

If the IRS does not have your direct deposit information for any reason, you can provide that information via an online "Get My Payment" portal that is available on their website here. The portal will also allow you to track the status of your payment.

These economic impact payments will be available throughout the rest of 2020, so you will still have time to file a tax return with any assistance you require. If you are unable to find the status of your payment or are experiencing a different issue with your stimulus payment, please contact my office for assistance.

If you would like to report an instance of price-gouging, fill out this form from Attorney General Keith Ellison's Office.
