Rep. Newman Announces $5 Million in Funding for Soundproofing Around Midway Airport
This funding will support program planning, design services and sound insulation for residences surrounding Midway Airport
CHICAGO, IL – Today, U.S. Representative Marie Newman (IL-03), proudly announced that the Department of Transportation has awarded a $5 million grant to support soundproofing for homes near Midway Airport in Chicago. This funding will significantly reduce noise pollution for families on Chicago’s Southwest Side.
“Noise pollution has been a significant concern for Southwest Side residents for decades, and I am thrilled to announce this funding which will reduce airplane noise for many families,” said Congresswoman Newman. “Since I was sworn into office, I have been fighting for measures to mitigate the harmful effects of airplane noise on families who live near Midway airport. I’m proud to have helped secure this crucial victory for the Southwest Side, and I will continue to fight to improve standards of living for communities across Illinois’ Third District.”
This grant funding will cover the first phase of a noise mitigation project for 341 residences near Midway Airport on Chicago’s Southwest Side. The funding for this phase supports program planning and design services, and sound insulation for 100 residences. More information from the Department of Transportation here.
Congresswoman Newman has consistently advocated for and secured infrastructure funding for Illinois’ Third District throughout her time in Congress. This funding for the community surrounding Midway Airport comes in addition to over $20.6 million secured for Midway Airport as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and $19 million for the Archer Avenue and the Belt Railway of Chicago (BRC) Grade Separation Project to reduce congestion in the area.
