Internships

Interns are a valuable part of the office and have the unique opportunity to see the legislative process in action. Internships are open to college students and recent graduates. Please note that we often receive more applications than we can accommodate and that applicants with strong ties to Orange County are given preference.

D.C. Internships

Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) seeks highly motivated interns for her DC office winter/spring program. The ideal candidate is highly organized, able to multitask, and has strong written and verbal communication skills.  

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Answer incoming phone calls to log opinions, connect staffers to outside stakeholders, and direct callers to appropriate resources
  • Enter and organize incoming constituent messages from mail and voicemail into the IQ database 
  • Draft form letters responding to constituent concerns
  • Respond to constituent messages through phone calls or emails as needed
  • Assist legislative team with researching data and information
  • Compile draft meeting memos for the legislative staff 
  • Track and input legislative meetings with partners, stakeholders, and constituents, in IQ 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the DC Staff Assistant

Preference will be given to interns who can work full-time and be in the office from 9 AM to 6 PM, but part-time candidates will also be considered. All interns receive a monthly stipend. District Internships

U.S. Congresswoman Katie Porter’s District Office is seeking highly motivated undergraduates, graduate students, and post-grads for her DO internship program in Irvine, California.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Answer incoming phone calls to log opinions, connect staffers to outside stakeholders, and direct callers to appropriate resources;
  • Enter and organize incoming constituent messages from mail and voicemail into the IQ database;
  • Draft form letters responding to constituent concerns;
  • Respond to constituent messages through phone calls or emails as needed;
  • Assist casework team with helping constituents with federal agencies;
  • Track and input meetings with partners, stakeholders, and constituents in IQ; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the DO Staff Assistant/Internship Coordinator.

Press Internships (Based in Orange County, CA)

The Office of Congresswoman Katie Porter (D-CA-45) is seeking a current student to serve as a press intern to assist with communications, social media, and graphic design, either remotely or in-person at our district office in Irvine, California. 

Candidates should possess strong written and verbal communication skills and have an interest in politics and government. Daily tasks include but are not limited to producing assets for the Congresswoman’s social media accounts, such as graphics and short videos; tracking and compiling mentions of the Congresswoman in the news; transcribing press interviews; creating and managing press lists; and assisting with media inquiries and research. Knowledge of programs like Adobe Creative Suite and Canva are a plus, but not required.

Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter, resume, and one writing sample (1-2 pages) as one attachment to katieporter.press@mail.house.gov with the subject “[full name] Summer 2022 press internship application”. We recommend that applicants also submit one to two examples of previous digital media or graphic design products, but this is not required. We are accepting applications on a rolling basis, but we will prioritize candidates that apply on or before August 15, 2022.
