Building Capacity of the Public Health System to Improve Population Health through National, Nonprofit Organizations

During fiscal years 2013–2018, CDC’s Center for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Support (CSTLTS) administered the five-year cooperative agreement, CDC-RFA-OT13-1302: Building Capacity of the Public Health System to Improve Population Health Through National, Nonprofit Organizationspdf icon. With funding from this cooperative agreement, along with funding and support from other CDC centers, institutes, and offices, the 25 national nonprofit recipients provided guidance and technical assistance to people and organizations on the frontlines of public health—such as health departments, community and neighborhood health centers, primary-care delivery systems, and public health institutes.

CoAg-Supported Programs and Products

Organizations provided capacity-building assistance, working toward sustaining and improving the performance of the public health system, with a priority on state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments. Among other things, capacity-building assistance resulted in increased—

• Adoption of new or proven business improvements
• Quality, availability, and accessibility of public health education, training, and evaluation tools and resources
• Implementation of evidence-based public health programs, policies, and services
