WASHINGTON – Rep. Tom O’Halleran, D- Ariz., criticized the U.S. Department of Agriculture during a recent House hearing on the western wildfires, saying “forest management has long been on the backburner at the federal level.”
Halleran made his observation during a hearing of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Conservation and Forestry.
Earlier this month the representative called for the hearing to explore the federal role in wildfire response, recovery, and reduction of fire risk.
Republican Sen. Martha McSally and Democratic Rep. Tom O’Halleran have proposed a bill to expand the boundaries of Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument in Flagstaff to include the visitor center that is located on Coconino National Forest land.
The bill would transfer about 97 acres of land to the National Park Service.
Sunset Crater is currently on National Park Service land; however, the associated visitor center, bunkhouse, and other outbuildings are located on Forest Service land.

Congress last week approved a bill that will provide nearly $1 billion annually to maintain national parks and buy additional land to protect wildlife, scenery and natural resources.

WASHINGTON — Major environmental legislation sailed through Congress Wednesday while the nation’s political leaders were stuck in intense negotiations over the contours of a fifth coronavirus relief package.
The bill would provide $9.5 billion over five years to pay down the National Park Service’s maintenance backlog and provide permanent funding at $900 million per year for the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which supports natural areas and recreation activities.
