LGBTQ Equality
While we’ve made significant progress on equality for our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters, much unfinished work remains to ensure true and lasting equality for this community and all American families.
In Congress, I’m committed to advancing commonsense legislation that ensures all Americans can live their American Dream, regardless of who they are or who they love. My priorities include:
- Passing the Equality Act, signature Civil Rights legislation of which I’m a proud original co-sponsor,
- Repealing the hateful and backwards ban on trans+ servicemembers,
- Ending health disparities that continue to negatively impact the LGBTQ+ community and
- Supporting LGBTQ+ students in the classroom and during after school activities.
In order to maintain a dialogue with the Chicagoland’s diverse LGBTQ+ community, I established an LGBTQ+ Advisory Task Force. The Task Force meets quarterly with me and other special guests to discuss key policy issues impacting the community. Chicago, IL – On Monday morning, Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) and Congressman Mark Takano (CA-41), co-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, hosted a COVID19 conference call discussion with members of the Illinois Second District LGBTQ Task Force.
On the call, Congresswoman Robin Kelly gave an update on the three enacted COVID19 response bills and efforts to pass new legislation to support families, small businesses and communities.
“Queer Eye” star Jonathan Van Ness discussed the Equality Act, which would codify civil rights protections for LGBT people, with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) after meeting with her Thursday.

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-IL), Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) and Congressman Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) sent a letter to Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella. The letter requested clarifying information about Microsoft’s decision to eliminate forced arbitration in sexual harassment cases.
