Costa Statement on Possible Lao and Hmong Deportations

(Washington) Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) released the following statement in response to reports that the Administration is negotiating with the Lao People's Democratic Republic to deport long-time Lao and Hmong residents of the United States:

“Hmong families have made incredible contributions to many communities across the country, including here in the Central Valley," said Costa. "Throughout my time in Congress, I have worked to ensure the Hmong community is celebrated and the Special Guerilla Unit (SGU) veterans receive the commendations and recognition they deserve.  Many Hmong who immigrated to the United States risked their lives for our country in the Vietnam War and would face life-threatening consequences if forced to return to the region.

The human rights situation in Laos is deeply troubling and the Administration’s recent moves to deport Hmong and Lao residents of the U.S. to that country are alarming.  I have sent letters to Secretary Pompeo and Acting Secretary Wolf to express my concerns and request more information. I am also supporting legislation that would require complete examination of the facts prior to determining whether they justify such action. My office has, and will continue to be actively engaged with the Hmong community in the Valley to provide further information and support in order to assist those affected.”
