Dear Friend,

After another busy week in Washington, I was back in the district for the 4th of July work period to talk to constituents about the important work we're doing in our nation's capital. Here are some highlights from the week of July 1st.

As we celebrate the 243rd birthday of our great nation, let's cherish the country we live in and appreciate the sacrifices our soldiers have made for us. I feel so proud to be part of the most wonderful country in the world and it's been my honor to work each and every day on behalf of you and your families in Washington. I wish you a safe and joyous holiday weekend. Happy Birthday, America!

 

 

Resolving the humanitarian crisis at our border

The situation at our border has escalated to a humanitarian crisis. It's past time we act to address these issues and that's why I supported a funding bill to immediately provide assistance to migrants in detention centers at our border. The bill provides money to supply basic needs like food, blankets and clean drinking water that these people should already be receiving. 




Engaging Valley Farmers

Last week I had the honor of hosting the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue for a town hall in Los Banos with Ag producers from across the valley. Among the discussion with participants were concerns about trade, water and immigration.

Pushing for fair elections

Also last week I voted to pass H.R. 2722, the S.A.F.E. Act (Securing America's Federal Elections) to guard against foreign interference in our democracy.

Protecting our elections is critical to ensuring that every American’s vote counts. I support the S.A.F.E. Act because it works to modernize our voting infrastructure and ensures that state and local election officials have the tools they need to safeguard the integrity of our elections.

Valley lands big dollars

Big news for Madera! My office helped secure much needed funding to help improve downtown and build affordable housing for the community. The $11.3 million dollar dollar grant will help build a 48 unit housing project for veterans, seniors and families and provide for improvements to pedestrian walkways and an adult bike share program.

New high school for Central Unified

Congratulations to the Central Unified School District which finally broke ground at the site of what will be their newest high school. It's been a long time coming for the district; they had to shelve plans to build the school back in 2008 due to the recession. The new state of the art high school is expected to be completed in the fall of 2021.

Downtown Merced ART HOP:

The city of Merced will host i's 3rd ART HOP of the year on Saturday, July 20th at 5:00 p.m. Come take a look at all the amazing art on display from local artists at a fun family friendly atmosphere.

Image Movies in the Park in Madera 

Madera's Parks and Community Services Department is hosting movies to residents at LIons Town and Country Park on July 19th.The event is FREE for everyone, providing great entertainment for the whole family!

Super Hero Dance 

Also in Madera, dress as your favorite super hero for the 6th annual Super Hero Dance hosted by the Madera Special Needs Sports and Recreations. The event is FREE!
