COVID-19 UPDATE: Due to the coronavirus shelter-in-place order, we're making some adjustments to our Congressional Art Competition.

1.) The deadline for submissions has been extended to 4 p.m. PT on Friday May 15.

2.) All submissions will be accepted electronically. Please submit a high resolution image of your art, plus another image measuring the longest side of your work (shown next to a ruler or measuring tape), along with the entry form
Send submissions or ask questions at CA15ArtComp@mail.house.gov.

3.) We recognize that students may not be able to have their teacher sign the student release form due to school closures. Students may indicate their teacher's support another way - for example, when submitting the form, the student may attach an email from an art teacher certifying the artwork's originality.

All other guidelines and requirements remain the same.

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

The contest is open to all high school students in California's 15th Congressional District; a panel of local artists will select the winners. The over-all winner of our district’s competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. The exhibit in Washington will also include artwork from other contest winners nation-wide.

The deadline to submit artwork is 4 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2020.

Artwork entered in the contest may be up to  26” x 26” x 4” (including the frame), two-dimensional, and no heavier than 15 pounds. The artwork may be:

  • Paintings – including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
  • Drawings – including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers
  • Collage
  • Prints – including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
  • Mixed Media
  • Computer Generated Art
  • Photography

All entries must be original in concept, design and execution, and must not violate U.S. copyright law. Work entered must be in the original medium - not a scanned reproduction of a painting or drawing.
